Social Media Experiment 1: Australian Politics, What Policy would you like to have pass in Federal Parliament

Vote1 Ausi1 As a Social Media experiment how powerful are we here in Australia to influence direction in Australian politics?

If you where able to make political policy statements what would you believe would be a good policy that would make Australia a better place that people would volte for?

The idea extends from my studies of Internet studies at Curtin University about the roll politician play in social media with the Kevin07 campaign and his presence on social media sites.

To get real value from the presence it would be Ideal to be able to contribute to the decisions making process and prove the power of social media. The idea is this. If we where to create our own candidate for Federal parliament what would the policies be made of?

  1. I would bring true competitive pressure to bear on the banks and start a name and shame social platform that lets people have their say and set their own bank charges. Power to the people. @peterfletcher

  2. Off the top of my head: we need rainwater tanks (for everyone that wants them), solar power (bigger subsidies for people who opt for this - if everyone went solar it would eventually be cheaper to install), and, to quote your own election promise...free internet \0/

Apart from that, our help to other Nations should be in the form of assistance in Natural and other Disasters (9/11; floods; bushfires; volcanic eruptions; earthquakes etc)...not bearing arms in war or the aftermath of it!

  3. The first thing I would like to see in Parliament is that the peoples represent the people that put them there, not a particular Party. Then maybe we will start seeing some common sense in our elected members.

But apart from that I think we need to reduce the number of levels of Government,. Local, State Federal. Lets get back to the grass roots.

Back on topic, This country needs a sustainable transportation plan. There is too much reliance on roads and not enough on public transport.

Our education system is state based , with Federal funds. Our hospital system is the same. Lets get it under one roof. The person paying the money needs to take responsibility.

Water management is other large issue. The Murray Darling fiasco is a prime example of grandstanding by one party ( blackmail, greenmail, whatever). There are floods up north, there is a drought in the South,. How much education do you need to build a pipe from the NT and QLD to catch the overflow.

    Enough, back to my esaay

  4. Here's what I wrote on the BB today:
What I think could be happening, is hopefully a complete change in the way the Internet has been 'consumed' through these social networking sites - but principally through Twitter.

Up until recently, interaction on the Internet was mostly through consumption of entertainment and information - hopefully, with Twitter as the pioneer, interaction will become more globally interactive and truly social - with the ideas of ordinary people taking centre stage:

    #@ausi1 for PM

Unfortunately, I think I'd be pretty useless to you Chris - I haven't got a political bone in my body and my nerve-endings are only set to passive.

However, if you need a peaceful 'sit-in' protest for deforestation/whaling/preservation of coral reefs/solar power/ rainwater tanks, a black tie organic vegetarian dinner party or would like me to produce some tie-dyed t-shirts with peaceful slogans splashed across them (for the campaign) - I'm available \0/

  5. I would love to see our governments engage us more in the decisions that affect us. All of us have a valid perspective on how we want things to be (as demonstrated by your experiment here). We should therefore be more involved in the decison making processes.

Any efforts in this area should be genuine... Tell us what you are doing with our ideas and show us that you listened by implementing what we decide.... Let us be part of coming up with the solution itself rather than just asking us what we think of what you (the politicians) decide...

Of course, I think that with what technology has to offer, that now this aim could be achieveable.... e-democracy, e-participation, e-collaboration is already happening... Let's get on board Australia

    Empower the people!!

Oh and free internet for all...

  6. in media the people are not heard till too late even when the effects of "a good idea" are outrageously wrong. Hopefully the policies will cover workplace agreements that actually make sense and maybe control given to someone who isnt a multi-millionaire and understands the value of a dollar been put towards worthwhile causes; not thinking $20k on mouse pads for an election push is a good idea (at least each one can be cut up into four coffee cup holders for those less fortunate)
I think the information should be given freely; if by the internet or school education people have the right to knowledge wether they use it correctly or not.Opening the internet
to the high speed and cheap connections that many other countries have would be a good start.
